Explanation of Furry

A subculture with ties to the science-fiction fandom, having interest in antropomorphic (human-like) animals. Members of this fandom/subculture have a wide variety of interests ranging from fascination with cartoon animals that stand upright and talk, like the Ninja Turtles or Disney's Robinhood, to dressing up in animal costumes and performing in public or on stage, even to beliefs of animal spirituality.
Some furries believe that "being a furry" began back in Egyptian times, or even further back when man first thought, "Gee, I wonder what it would be like if animals thought and felt like us" or, "I wonder what it would be like to be an animal."
In pop culture The Furry Fandom began back in the 60's, but without the internet member numbers were very small and scattered by thousands of miles. Many had animalistic feelings or tendencies, but without others to share these feelings or interests with they never knew how to express them except through art and fetish dress (aka cat-girl fetish outfits).
With the invention of the internet furries began to find and communicate with each other on mass. Today the Furry Fandom rivals the Sci-Fi and Star Trek Fandoms in member numbers and convention sizes. Anthrocon, the world's biggest furry con made it into th Gunnis Book of World Records this year as The World's biggest convention.
The basis for the furry fandom is emotional and spiritual kinship to animals and a love for anthropomorphic (to have human-like features, like walking upright, speaking and having opposable thumbs) animal art.
As a spiritual aspect many furries feel that they have a spiritual connection to animals, or have an animal spirit guide much like Native American Shamanism, or Pegan Wicanism. Furries with this belief may say that they have the spirit of a particular animal, or will feel a divine kinship with a particular animal. At the very least most furries feel that they have a deeper understanding of animal behavior and thought than most other people.
The furry fandom has received a lot of bad press in the past for the erotic nature of some furry art and the vast amount of fetishes present in the fandom. Many outsiders assume that all furries like to have sex with animals, or at the very least are perverted. But to many furries sex isn't even equated to their love of animals and of furry art. Many simply love anthro characters like Disney Robin Hood, The Ninja Turtles, Thundercats, Anime Cat girls and ect and yearn for the day it would be possible to undergo surgery to be more animal-like.
Some furries like to dress up in animal mascot costumes and perform comedy-variety acts on stage or in public for the amusement of others. This too has a dark stigma attached to it as most who have seen the CSI episode about furries assume that "fursuits" are for sex.
I, myself am a very kinky individual. I don't feel that it has anything to do with being a furry. Perhaps it does, but I have many other interests in the furry fandom that have nothing to do with sex. I have a deep, innocent love for cartoon characters and would love to undergo a medical procedure to grow fur, have a tail (or 3), a muzzle and a full set of razor-sharp canine teeth
