It's nearly 2012 - our British Olympic Year - and I can hardly believe it's come so fast. I've got my tickets and am looking forward to a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Here is one of the latest pics of the Olympic Park.

Just over 2 years to go and things are really taking shape in the London Olympic Park. As you can see, the stadium is beginning to look like a stadium. The building on the right with the wave-like roof is the swimming and aquatics centre. Beyond that is the Athletes' Village and other buildings you can see are for Basketball, Handball, Cycling, Hockey and the International Broadcast Centre. Later this month, they begin to recruit the 70,000 volunteers they need to make the Games run smoothly. I'm thinking about applying.

Set in the soon to be renowned London Olympic Park, the Amish Kapoor Orbit Sculpture is being designed to be the tallest structure in the UK. Standing 22 metres taller than the Statue of Liberty, the sculpture will serve a similar purpose as it will allow visitors stunning views across the city. With an elevator set inside the Orbit to get people to the top, and a huge spiralling staircase giving them the option of walking back down, Amish Kapoor's creation is certain to be one of the most talked about Olympic structures in the run up to the Games in 2012. In colour and form, it kind of reminds me of the Eiffel Tower in Paris - but an Eiffel Tower that has melted and wilted in some massive heatwave lol. What do you think of it?

Chariot of Fire

I don't know how widely this is known outside of England, but a persistent theory exists that Jesus, while still a youth, accompanied his uncle, Joseph of Arimithea, on at least one of Joseph's trading trips to England. Joseph, among other things, was a tin merchant - England being one of the chief exporters of tin at that time. The poet William Blake felt inspired enough by this story to write the following :-
And did those feet in ancient time Walk upon England's mountains green? And was the holy Lamb of God On England's pleasant pastures seen? And did the Countenance Divine Shine forth upon our clouded hills? And was Jerusalem builded here Among those dark satanic mills?
Bring me my bow of burning gold Bring me my arrows of desire Bring me my spear: O clouds unfold! Bring me my chariot of fire, I shall not cease from mental fight Nor shall my sword sleep in my hand Till we have built Jerusalem In England's green and pleasant land.
These words were set to music by Sir Hubert Parry and have since become England's favourite patriotic song - King George V said that he much preferred Jerusalem (as it became known)to the National Anthem. This is one of my college's favourite songs too, and we sing a very vigorous version (with actions)at every opportunity.

Nearly 6 months since I posted the pic of London's Olympic Stadium and things have moved on. The shell is complete now and they are working on fitting out the interior and will start adding the roof soon.
The city to host the 2016 summer olympic games will be elected on October 2nd - the 4 candidates are Chicago, Rio de Janiero, Tokyo and Madrid. I would like Chicago to get it but have a feeling that Rio might win.

Funeral Rites

I don't mean to be morbidly depressing, lol, but does anyone else get to wondering sometimes about the manner of their eventual death and the nature of their consequent funeral?
Without dwelling overmuch on the subject, I occasionally give the topic some thought - I know, for instance, that I want some of my favourite songs and pieces of music played at my funeral. I would be interested to hear other people's thoughts.
Because I like poetry so much, I would definitely want a poem read by someone at the funeral service - this one by William Ernest Henley is one of my favourites.
Invictus
Out of the night that covers me, Black as the Pit from pole to pole, I thank whatever gods may be For my unconquerable soul.
In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud, Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed.
Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the horror of the shade, And yet the menace of the years Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.
It matters not how strait the gate, How charged with punishments the scroll, I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

This is the latest pic of the London 2012 Olympic Stadium - although there are over 3 years to go until the Opening Ceremony, I think they have made great progress so far. What do you think?

Some years ago, when Jeff was just a lad, his high school drama department decided to perform Shakespeare's play 'Romeo and Juliet' Jeff was given the part of a Townsman - he had no lines and he wasn't even on stage much - but Jeffy didn't mind as it was fun just to be part of the show. One day at rehearsal, the director called all the male members of the cast together and said "Now boys, this is a mediaeval play and you are all going to be wearing mediaeval costumes - a very short jacket called a Doublet and full length mediaeval tights. Now - to avoid any unsightly lumps or embarrassing bumps, I want all boys to wear a jock under their tights. And i mean everybody." At this point, Jeffy put up his hand and asked, "Sir - even those guys with small parts?"
