London Obituary - a must read‏

An Obituary printed in the London Times - Interesting and sadly rather true Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend,Common Sense, who has been with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was, since his birth records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape. He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as: - Knowing when to come in out of the rain; - Why the early bird gets the worm; - Life isn't always fair; - and Maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you can earn) and reliable strategies (adults, not children, are in charge). His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well-intentioned but overbearing regulations were set in place. Reports of a 6-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job that they themselves had failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
It declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to administer sun lotion or an aspirin to a student; but could not inform parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion. Common Sense lost the will to live as the churches became businesses; and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault..
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realize that a steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap, and was promptly awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death, by his parents, Truth and Trust, by his wife, Discretion, by his daughter, Responsibility, and by his son, Reason.
He is survived by his 4 stepbrothers; I Know My Rights I Want It Now Someone Else Is To Blame I'm A Victim
Not many attended his funeral because so few realized he was gone.

Don't talk to my parrot!

Wanda's dishwasher quit working so she called in a repairman. Since she had to go to work the next day, she told the repairman, "I'll leave the key under the mat. Fix the dishwasher, leave the bill on the counter, and I'll mail you a check. Oh, by the way don't worry about my dog Spike. He won't bother you."
"But, whatever you do, do NOT, under ANY circumstances, talk to my parrot!"
"I MUST STRESS TO YOU: DO NOT TALK TO MY PARROT!!!"
When the repairman arrived at Wanda's apartment the following day, he discovered the biggest, meanest looking dog he has ever seen. But, just as she had said, the dog just lay there on the carpet watching the repairman go about his work.
The parrot, however, drove him nuts the whole time with his incessant yelling, cursing and name calling.
Finally the repairman couldn't contain himself any longer and yelled, "Shut up, you stupid, ugly bird!"
To which the parrot replied,
"Get him Spike!"
See - Men just don't listen!

Rose Coloured Lenses

As the print continues to grow smaller and smaller I decided it was time to see my eye doctor only to find out that he has gone into semi-retirement. I saw the do doctor in his office who looks a lot like Doogy Howard. He doesn't look old enough to shave let alone be old enough to call Doctor. Hmmm, maybe my eyes aren't the only problem.
I've got perfect double vision. The doc asked me if it cause problems or gave me head aches. Usually it's not a problem. I just look out of one eye. He gave me some exercises to do in order to improve my lazy eye and a new lenses prescript on to help with my reading. The way things are now I get sleepy if I read to long so new glasses should help. I should be able to pick them up next week. It takes a bit longer when you get the lenses tinted.
No, I didn't get rose coloured lens. I'm optimistic enough without having to look through an altered sense of reality. I did get transitional lenses because they are a lot less hassle then having to worry about sunglasses.
Having a clear outlook on the world around me is important and from my point of view things look good.

The Recession has hit everybody ...
I got a pre-declined credit card in the mail.
Wives are having sex with their husbands because they can't afford batteries.
CEO's are now playing miniature golf.
Exxon-Mobil laid off 25 of it's Congressmen.
A stripper was killed when her audience showered her with rolls of pennies while she danced.
I saw a Mormon polygamist with only one wife. If the bank returns your check marked "Insufficient Funds", you call them and ask if they meant you or Them.
McDonald's is selling the 1/4 ouncer.
Angelina Jolie adopted a child from America .
Parents in Beverly Hills fired their nannies and learned their children's names.
My cousin had an exorcism but couldn't afford to pay for it, and they re-possessed her!
A picture is now only worth 200 words
When Bill and Hillary travel together, they now have to share a room.
The Treasure Island casino in Las Vegas is now managed by Somali pirates.
Congress says they are looking into this Bernard Madoff scandal. Oh, Great! The guy who made $50 Billion disappear is being investigated by the people who made $1.5 Trillion disappear! And, finally ... I was so depressed last night thinking about the economy, wars, jobs,my savings, Social Security, retirement funds, etc., I called the Suicide Hotline. I got a call center in Pakistan, and when I told them I was suicidal, they got all excited, and asked if I could drive a truck.

The Art of Graffitii

Medicine Hat as a zero tolerance bi-law on graffiti. Property owners must remove graffiti with in 24 hours or face a fine. They also have a choice of participating in a program with those aspiring artists. Together the property owner and the graffiti artists turn blank spaces into works of art. As a result Medicine Hat has a colour variety of murals on it's buildings which show the real talents of the some really talented young artists. What makes the program really successful is that it draws disenfranchised youth back into the community where they can be proud of their accomplishments. I've always believed we all have potential and as a former probation officer I live creative solutions that keep young people out of the criminal justice system, fosters their potential and draws them back into society.

Back in the day when I was much younger it was quite common for men looking for sex to use keys or a hanky in their back pocket or tied to a belt loop. There are several theroies of how this practice came about.
One is that it originated with the cowboys of the wild west. Because of a shortage of women during the California gold-rush it was quite common for men to dance with other men in the saloons along the Barbary Coast. Those who took the lead would wear a hanky in the right back pocket of their Levi's and those who followed wore a hanky in their left.
The other most common theory is that this tradition grew out of the leather and S&M community.
Most likely this secrert language developed out of both communities
No matter how this form of comunication developed it is an interesting look at how in the past the gay community developed secret codes to communicate and connect with other gay men. Understanding these codes made it much easier to hook up with other men who shared similar intrests.
Learning how to communicate with one another is a major part of developing a culture and building a community. Things have changed in the LBGTs community as we have grown over the years. Secret language and codes are no longer needed today as members of the gay community are far more open. With a click of a mouse we can find exactly what we are looking for. By looking at our past we can see just how diverse our community was and is, just what a challange it use to be and in many ways still is to find Mr. Right or Mr. Right Now. Based on the popularity of chat sites there still seams to be a lot of people looking.
Of course if you don't know the "language" or what you are looking for it can create all sorts of problems. It's just one of the reasons I got into so much trouble in the past. It wasn't till I learned the language of the heart and was able to move beyond just the physical that things got a whole lot simpler in my life.
Love and sex shouldn't be complicated. If it feels good and right then it is. If you are not having fun you are not doing it right.
It's all good!

To Survive is Not Enough

Life is not just about quantity. It is also about quality. It is not enough to just survive. We must also be able to grow and thrive. The work I do, even if only as a volunteer, is one of the most rewarding things I have ever done on mu life. It is not what I do that is so meaningful but rather the people that I have the opportunity to meet, work with and serve that really gives my life meaning. I am as likely to so stop as, well, as likely as I am able to stop breathing.
I've decided to continue with my appointment on the national council I've been asked to serve on and am strongly considering running for the national board of directors. I'll have to make my final decision within the next couple of weeks. If I do run for the board I will find out the results this November when I attend the annual general meeting in Toronto.
I've learned that I not only thrive when I stay involved but that I feel and do my very best.
Life is not a spectators sport. It is meant to be played out to it's fullest. Happiness and fulfillment can only be achieved by doing.

It's a Wrap

One of the announcements that came out of the Rome HIV Resource Conference which wrapped up this week was about treatment as prevention. With effective with treatment the prevention of the HIV virus can be prevented 96% of the time during regular sexual activities. That's about the same or better then the rate of infection with condom use. I've always maintained that prevention is the best form of treatment and this is just a new twist on an old message. Before you get to excited and throw ought all those condoms it's important to remember that while you may not be infectious but you are still at risk for other STI's. Syphilis is rampant in the gay and bisexual community and a drug resistant strain of gondarea has emerged out of Asia.
Get tested! Know your HIV status not only for yourself but for those you live. Treatment can and does make all the difference.
The message remains the same. There still is no cure and prevention is still the best defence we have. To wrap it up "WRAP IT UP!"

...not always about me!

I've been spending a lot of time outside this summer. Even when I'm home I'm out on the deck. When it comes to being on line I've gotten quite lazy. Not only have I not been blogging I haven't been reading peoples blogs either. This tropical heat wave we've been having has me feeling a bit lazy. The heat wave from down south has extended north across most of Canada. While we are use to summer heat here in Alberta we are not use to the record high humidity making this a real tropical heat wave.
My life has slowed down somewhat and that is a good thing. Still my life remains a celebration filled with gratitude. I've been given so much it is impossible to ever comprehend it's total let alone begin to pay it back. As I've said many times before gratitude is not just a feeling or an attitude, it is a way of life. What has been freely given to me must be freely given away. What has been given in not the external things that have the greatest value but rather things internal and that is truly priceless.
Phil is moving in the fall. He won his legal battle at work and was fully reinstated. As a result he is back at work. His employer is sending him back to school. It's a move to get him out of the diocese more then anything. While I'm glad he won his case I'm not so happy about him moving. He's moving to Florida. I would prefer him moving north instead of south but then we don't always get what we want. Instead we get what we need. What that is isn't always clear to us at the time. It would be easy to say why is this happening to me but then it may not be about me at all. None of us live in a vacuum and what is happening may be about lessons someone else needs to learn.
Again it's one of those mysteries of the universe. It is not always about me and that's a good thing. Understanding that is one of the keys to happiness.
It's all good!

Laws of the Universe

It's been hot the last couple of weeks, so hot that my computer fizzled and crashed for good. The next day a friend of mine showed up with a new laptop for me. I was thrilled but not really surprised. He knew I couldn't afford to go out and buy a new one so he went and picked up one for me. He's just that type of guy. Every so often these random acts of kindness just reconfirm in my mind that if you just trust in the process things always seam to work out for the best, not that I just sit on my butt and wait for the universe to give me what I want or need, but rather if I give of myself to those around me, if I try to treat others with dignity and respect, then the universe conspires in my favor.
It is the natural law of the universe, we get back what we put in. If I want my life to be filled with love and kindness then I first need to be loving and kind. If I want to find a prince I first must become a prince. Simply put I get out of life exactly what I am willing to put into life. My happiness is my responsiblility. It is up to me to go out and make it happen. Happiness is not the destination, it is a choice, a process, a way of life.
...and it's all good!
